Harlem Edge Competition: Cultivating Connections - January 2012

HARLEM PIERS FARM ©
SUSTAINABLY REPURPOSED NYC PIER
Urban Farm & Community Hub

A concept proposal for Nourishing NYC's new headquarters, this interactive community site on a Hudson River pier is an urban farm with all-weather greenhouse and community garden program. Its Barn, constructed with reused NYS barnwood, includes offices, workspace, kitchens, storage and demonstration areas. The single story structure enables a river view-corridor from 12th Avenue, easy accessibility to all, and a covered walkway for all-weather access and shade. The Nourishing Cafe's shaded riverview tables welcome Greenway pedestrians and bikers. Beyond vegetables, Harlem Piers Farm harvests solar energy for electricity and hot water, plus rainwater for irrigation, and daylight. This community hub provides bike parking and rental, a water taxi shelter and a pedestrian plaza under the highway, with bus and taxi stops on 12th Avenue.

Sustainable Design Elements
1,400 Solar PV and Solar Thermal Panels generating electric and hot water.
Rainwater Harvest and Storage for irrigation.
Daylight Illumination.
Built with reused New York State barn siding and timbers.
